Promising swimmer David O’Sullivan from Salthill has been chosen as the recipient of the 2012 BUA Emerging Sports Talent Award.
A member of Galway Swim Club, 16-year-old David is the only Galway swimmer to have qualified for the Youth Olympic Festival for the past six years.
Boasting several national Butterfly and Freestyle records, David has qualified to represent Ireland at the European Junior Championships and has his sights firmly set on achieving the qualifying time for the Rio De Janerio Olympic Games in 2016.
The BUA Emerging Sports Talent Award, now in its second year, aims of supporting, recognising and developing upcoming sporting talent from Galway City and County. Founded by a number of leading professionals, the award includes a €12,000 prize package comprising a year’s worth of treatment and training plans, consultations and membership from supporting partners Keith Gildea of Ocean Fitness, Trish Strelioff of Baily Point Physiotherapy, Maeve Gacquin of Maeve Gacquin Nutrition Consulting, Sarah Thornton of Sarah Thornton Personal Training, Dr Aideen Henry of Galway Clinic and sports psychologist Niamh Fitzpatrick.
Runner Keith Fallon, recipient of the BUA Emerging Sports Talent Award 2011, said the award offered him a “new perspective” on his sport that he “would not have realised without it”.
“Training and improving, I have learned, consists of much more than putting on my shoes and running. The best part of the award is the access to professionals and the facilities I’ve got access to this year were of huge benefit to me. A full medical has given me (and more importantly, my mother) peace of mind that I’m fully healthy and have no underlying conditions,” he said.
“Overall, the award has been a huge benefit to me so far. The best part of it is no doubt the individualistic treatment, support and help I have received. I have improved my personal best and have been offered a running scholarship in the US.”
