Page 1 of 2 Ireland's entry to the Volvo Ocean Race, the country's first entry since NCB Ireland 19 years ago, is known as the Green Team. Like the other aspects of the Irish bid, it has been lead by Galway businessmen John Killeen, Enda O'Coineen and Eamon Conneely, all of whom sit on the board of the syndicate funding the team. Although sailors have not yet been recruited to make up the crew of ten, there has been speculation in sailing circles that Wexford sailor Justin Slattery and Cork native Damian Foxall may be recruited. Ian Walker, SkipperIan Walker (37) is one of Britain's most accomplished sailors, with five world championships, two Olympic silver medals and two Americas Cup campaigns to his credit. The two Olympic medals came in the 470 dinghy (Atlanta 1996) and Star keelboat (Sydney 2000). Ian then went onto coach Shirley Robertson and her Yngling Team to gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics. When Briton launched its first bid for the Americas Cup for 14 years in 2000, Walker was named as the skipper. In the 2007 Americas' Cup, he joined fellow Olympic medallist Iain Percy as the navigator of the Italian team +39. Americas' Cup commitments were combined with the highly successful TP52 campaign as skipper of Patches, owned by Galway man Eamon Conneely, in which he came third in the Breitling MedCup circuit and second in the Global Championships. Walker has a Geography degree from Cambridge University and is married with two young daughters. Jamie Boag, Team PrincipalOriginally from Bangor in Co. Down, Jamie Boag has received international acclaim as a racing sailor. In recent years he has specialised in the project management and marketing of high performance yachts and race boats. His background in sales, marketing and finance has been gained over the past 15 years and has involved establishing the family aviation business and working as an equity dealer and investment manger for five years in Ireland and the UK. Returning to the marine industry in 2000, Jamie has been involved with some of the world's top designers and yards on high value custom racing and cruising projects, and with prestige yacht brokerage through Europe's largest yacht broker. John Killeen, Chairman, Let's do it IrelandA well known Galway sailor, John Killeen is CEO of the Colas Group (Cold Chon), the Oranmore-based manufacturer of road surfacing materials. He is a former president of the Institute of Engineers, the representative voice of the engineering profession in Ireland, and was the Chairman of the Galway Docklands Redevelopment Committee. |
