As we head for the All-Ireland final on Sunday we take a look at a victory over the same opposition in the past. Galway had lost the All-Ireland finals of 1985 and 1986 and after an epic semi-final against Tipperary, faced Kilkenny in the All-Ireland senior hurling final of 1987.

It was a low scoring and bruising final but most importantly it was Galway that came out on top. This was a game of high intensity where marking was tight and life and limb were tested.

Galway led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time and the lively Galway forwards were held tight and the Kilkenny front line rarely got time or space to threaten Galway. It was that kind of game and seven players were booked and some maybe could have been sent-off.

Gerry McInerney who was brought home from the United States was outstanding. Conor Hayes kept Liam Fennelly scoreless. Sylvie Linnane and Ollie Kilkenny worked hard. Pete Finnerty and Tony Keady were also dominant and goalkeeper John Commins made some brilliant stops.

Steve Mahon and Pat Malone towered at midfield. The bruising battle between Ger Henderson and Brendan Lynskey is still talked about and Joe Cooney, Martin Naughton, Michael McGrath, Eanna Ryan and Anthony Cunningham had to work hard for anything they got.

Christy Heffernan tried hard for Kilkenny but Ger Fennelly was left to score seven of Kilkenny’s nine points, six from frees.

At the end Noel Lane became Galway’s hero scoring the all-important goal in the closing stages to seal the victory.

Galway: J Commins; S Linnane, C Hayes, O Kilkenny; P Finnerty, T Keady (0-2), G McInerney; S Mahon (0-2), P Malone; M McGrath (0-1), J Cooney (0-5), M Naughton (0-1); E Ryan, B Lynskey, A Cunningham (0-1).

Subs: N Lane (1-0) for M Naughton, PJ Molloy for A Cunningham, T Kilkenny for M McGrath.

Kilkenny: K Fennelly; J Hennessy, P Prendergast, J Henderson; L Talsh, G Henderson, S Fennelly; G Fennelly (0-7), L Ryan; K Brennan, C Heffernan, R Power; P Walsh, L Fennelly, H Ryan (0-1).

Subs: T Lennon (0-1) for P Walsh, L McCarthy for R Power.

Referee: T Murray (Limerick).
