All of the positions on the Galway football committee will be uncontested at tomorrow night’s Galway football convention.
As expected there was no big surprises in the nomination, with chairman Tadhg O Conghaile, secretary Seamus O’Grady, assistant secretary Padraig O Griofa, treasurer Milo Costello, assistant treasurer Seamus Connolly and PRO Seamus Finnerty returning to the positions they held last year. Tuam Stars club man Michael Geraghty will become the new vice chairman following the death of Killanin’s Paddy Sweeney during the year.
And in his address to convention, secretary Seamus O’Grady paid tribute to Paddy Sweeney, whom he described as a ‘larger than life’ character.
“Our colleague and vice chairman, Paddy Sweeney, sadly lost his life in a tragic accident near his home on the 3rd of October last,” the secretary’s address read.
“Paddy served on the West Board and West GPC as vice chairman and chairman for over 20 years and in more recent times has served as assistant treasurer and vice chairman of the Football Committee, a position he held at the time of his sudden and untimely death.
“He was a larger than life character, who loved life and was involved in every aspect of the GAA and in football particularly. May he rest in peace,” he said.
The football convention takes place at Ionaid Peil na Gaillimhe in Claregalway tomorrow (Thursday) night at 7.45pm. The hurling convention takes place at the same venue in a week’s time, which will be followed the following Thursday night by the Galway County Convention.
