Wonder goal not enough for Salthill as controversy reigns

Galway’s All-Ireland winning goalkeeper of 2001 Alan Keane was the hero for Killererin as he landed a 45 in the 9th minute of stoppage to salvage a draw in a bad-tempered Galway SFC quarter-final at Tuam Stadium on Sunday evening.

Keane had seen a free moments earlier from five metres further out deflected for a 45 as controversy reigned in a game that saw three players from each side booked.

It seemed as of the introduction of Galway hurler Alan Kerins had swung it in Salthill’s favour as he set up a superb goal for Barry Dooney before landing a point to help put them 2-6 to 0-8 in front with six minutes remaining.

The goal was as a good as any scored at the famous venue as Finian Hanley started the move when he intercepted a ball in front of his own goal and the ball before Dooney started to take it upfield as the tackles came in.

Kerins also played a key role and by the time Sean Armstrong and Seamie Crowe brought the ball deep inside Killererin territory, Dooney had continued his run to regain possession and dispatch the ball into the top left corner of the net.

But Killererin never give up and they were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a highly controversial penalty when Padraic Joyce was adjudged to have been fouled by Salthill goalkeeper Cathal McGinley. His older brother Tommie dispatched the ball to the net to reduce the deficit to the minimum with six minutes remaining.

And they got back on level terms two minutes from the end of normal time when Shane Hughes fisted the ball over the bar.

Kerins looked to have secured it with he pointed in the second minute of stoppage time but Killererin had an unlikely hero in Keane to force a replay.

Killererin had put themselves into a strong position for victory when they led by 0-6 to 1-2 at the end of the first-half when they were playing against the breeze.

Salthill hit the ground running and led by 1-1 to 0-2 after eight minutes when Sean Armstrong blasted to the roof of the net after collecting a long free from former Mayo player Maurice Sheridan.
But Killererin managed to get plenty of players behind the ball and three pointed frees from Padraig Joyce hauled them back into contention, while they forged ahead with two good efforts from corner-forward Shane Hughes.

However, the foul-ridden nature of the game ensured few passages of open play with a free count of 17-11 in Killererin’s favour at the break. By the end it was 27-20 to Killererin.
