West Coast Wheelers riders put in a strong showing at the two days of racing organised by Galway Bay CC in Oughterard at the weekend. Saturday's 10km time trial took in the notorious Glann Circuit, looping from the centre of Oughterard down towards the lake, then climbing towards home via New Village. Only seconds separated the top ten riders, WCW's Ruaidhrí Geraghty claiming third, with teammates Brian O'Donnell and Art MacManusa just seconds behind. Also riding for the club were mountain bikers Donncha O'Brien and Mike Flanagan, while Sadhbh Baxter was the fastest woman on the day. Sunday's road race left Oughterard, travelling towards Moycullen and taking the loop down past Cloonabinnia and Ballinahalla before returning to Oughterard for a gruelling 5 laps of the Glann Circuit. The pace was fast from the off with a number of riders attempting to break away in the early stages. On the return trip via Ross Wood, a small group that included Brian O'Donnell finally got clear, but the pack gradually chased them down and the break was caught coming back into Oughterard, A lap and a half later, a group of three Kanturk riders broke away and were able to hold their advantage to the finish line. Two WCW riders finished in the chasing bunch, with Ruaidhrí Geraghty in 9th and Anthony Testa in 11th. This put Geraghty into a fine 2nd place finish over the two days, with MacManusa 5th. Mike Flanagan, Tom Porter and Sadhbh Baxter also competed in the road race, finishing a lap down on the winners on the tough course. |
