Galway United will head to Ipswich Town for a pre-season training camp next week. Tony Cousins will take his squad to Portman Road at the invitation of his former Liverpool colleague Jim Magilton. The Ipswich manager brought his side to Terryland Park for a friendly eighteen months ago, shortly after Cousins was appointed Galway United boss. United, who started their pre-season campaign on Monday, will travel to Suffolk on Monday, February 18th and will spend the week there, with a match pencilled in against Ipswich Town on Wednesday, February 20th. The training camp will be part of a busy pre-season campaign for Cousins and his side as they prepare for the start of the league on March 7. United will travel to Limerick 37 for the first of four friendlies against domestic opposition on Friday week, February 1. The following Friday they will entertain Athlone Town at Terryland Park before heading to Waterford United the following Tuesday, February 12th. Following the training camp in Ipswich, United will go to Flancare Park to take on Longford Town on Friday, February 29th, before opening their league campaign the following week. "Each of the fixtures announced today will be good, competitive games and will go a long way in getting the players fitness up to standard for the start of the season in March," said Cousins. Meanwhile, Cousins and some of his players took time out of their preparations for the new season by taking a training session with Athenry FC U-15 squad. Cousins put the young stars through an hour long training session, aided by Galway United players Alan Keane, Derek O'Brien and new signing Jay O'Shea. Cousins said he was delighted to get the chance to bring Galway United out to Athenry. "It was great fun. I think the lads enjoyed it as well particularly getting the chance to play with players of the standard of Alan, Derek and Jay." "As I said to the lads after the session, for those young players aspiring to play at a higher level, be it eircom League or beyond that, they can learn a lot from coming to Terryland and watching Galway United play." "I'd encourage them to focus on the player who plays in their favourite position particularly watching his movement, both on and off the ball, positioning and technique; they're the things you don't pick up when watching televised games," he said. |
