Galway United 0, Derry City 4 A blistering first-half performance from Derry City, in which they bagged four goals, clinched the three points in a very one-sided encounter in Terryland Park on Friday evening. Goals from Gareth McGlynn, Mark Farren, Niall McGinn and Thomas Stewart condemned United to their 12th league defeat of the season. The Candystripes broke the deadlock after five minutes and it came from midfielder McGlynn. Farren picked up possession 25 yards out and slipped a crisp pass to McGlynn on the left of the area. Alvin Rouse seemed to have control of the situation, but the Derryman's weak shot somehow slipped through his grasp and over the line. The visitors doubled their lead after 22 minutes, this time through top-scorer Farren. Kevin Deery floated a lovely ball over Marc McCulloch for McGinn and Farren was at the near post to bundle home his drilled square ball. On the half hour it was McGinn's turn to bag himself a goal, in what was a carbon-copy of the first goal. Ciaran Martyn provided the through ball down the left channel and McGinn fired a low shot across Rouse for City's third. A clearly rattled United folded completely a minute later as Stewart fired home, after Ruairdhi Higgins had placed the ball perfectly into his path. He calmly stroked past Rouse for his second league goal of the season. United had one chance of note in the opening period – a snap shot from Vinny Faherty – but Gerard Doherty saved with his feet. The rebound fell to Derek Glynn but his effort looped to safety over the crossbar. United emerged for the second half facing an arduous task, but player-manager Jeff Kenna almost pulled one back for the home side. The impressive Jay O'Shea controlled the dropping ball and laid it off to Kenna, whose blistering drive was batted away to safety by Doherty. Derry totally shut down the second half and cruised to the easiest of victories. Afterwards Kenna said: "The first goal was very soft. Against good teams you cannot give them those sorts of opportunities, because their finishing was clinical and the game was over after half an hour. If that continues we will be relegated."
