Galway United gave themselves a timely boost in the quest to stave of relegation with a 2-0 win over Finn Harps at Ballybofey on Friday night.

A first-half goal from John Russell and a late strike from man of the match Jay O'Shea were enough to see Jeff Kenna's side leapfrog the Donegal men to third from bottom of the Eircom League table.

While Galway are still confined to the relegation zone, they are now level on points with UCD one place above them and go into tonight's League Cup semi-final with Derry City at Terryland Park with renewed optimism.
