Galway United boss Tony Cousins wants his side to show the sort of heart and commitment which netted them a draw in Cork last weekend when league leaders Drogheda United come to Terryland Park on Friday evening (7.45 pm).

ImageUnited’s resilience in Turner’s Cross on Friday evening saw them extend their unbeaten run to four games and give themselves some breathing space at the foot of the table.

But with away trips to relegation contenders Bray Wanderers and Waterford United still to come with nine matches remaining, United need to keep the momentum up to guarantee their top-flight status for next season.

And runaway leaders Drogheda will come to Terryland fired up after surrendering a 2-0 lead to Tony Cousins men at United Park a couple of weeks ago and then losing 1-0 at home to UCD on Monday night.

United go into this match on the back of their first home win of the season against Sligo Rovers and three draws on the road against Drogheda, UCD and Cork City.

“We just need to worry about our own results and the sort of commitment shown in Cork on Friday night is what we need for the remainder of the season and the results will come,” said Cousins.

Indeed, United might well have taken all three points after Cork goalkeeper Michael Devine was red-carded 17 minutes from time for handling outside the box as Derek Glynn bore down on goal.

Both sides had chances to win the game with Cork hitting the woodwork with a good strike from John O’Flynn in the opening half
United had plenty of chances with Glynn’s pace always a big threat  but they failed to test stand-in keeper Denis Behan as they came away from Turner’s Cross with their second 0-0 scoreline of the season.

“Every game is vital from here on and the Drogheda game will be a big test but we have shown in recent weeks we can mix it with the best of them and we will take them on with confidence,” said Cousins.
