Wexford 3-13 Galway went down by three points to Wexford in a senior hurling challenge game in Craanford on Monday night, but manager Ger Loughnane will be reasonably pleased with the display of a side shorn of many regular starters. First half goals from David Redmond, Diarmuid Lyng and Rory Jacob looked to have fired the home side into an unassailable position. But in the absence of Ger Farragher and Joe Canning, Kerril Wade's precise free-taking kept Galway in touch – he finished with eight points, all from placed balls. Wexford led by five points at the interval but Galway put up stout resistance in the second period, despite the game losing much of its shape amid a welter of substitutions. Captain Ollie Canning emerged at corner-back for the second half and he helped tighten the defensive sector. And as Wexford lost momentum a late Galway rally almost forced a draw, with Niall Healy impressive in bagging four points from play. Galway will continue their championship preparations with another challenge game against Limerick on Sunday evening in Loughrea.
