Page 1 of 2 The Tribesmen Junior 18 and Junior 16 womens crews enjoyed great success when they travelled to Ghent for the two-day Belgian and Flemish Rowing Championships hosted by KR Sport Rowing Club. The crews had a remarkable weekend's racing with commendable performances from every rower in a competition where there were approximately 1,650 crews from ten countries and the standard was extremely high. The first day was the most successful for Tribesmen as they won three pots from four races at the Junior 18s level. Twins Rachel and Sarah Egan had an excellent win in the coxless pair. They were joined by Aisling Harris and Lisa Dilleen to win the coxless four as well. Then there was the awesome win in coxed 8 with the four girls already mentioned joining Lorna Smith, Lizanne Gallagher, Aine Power and Cassie Deegan with Katie O'Gorman coxing. This was a thrilling race that saw Tribesmen pushed to the very end where they won by less than half a boat-lenght having been comfortably in the lead earlier in the race. The final boat of the day was the Junior U18 coxless quad which had three of the Junior 16 crew, Cassie Deegan, Aine Power and Katie McDonagh joined by Lizanne Gallagher, finished down the field in a highly competitive race. These results led to the Tribesmen Rowing Club being awarded the 'City of Ghent' trophy which is awarded to the club with the best result during the finals of the International Championships for Juniors. The fantastic weather over the weekend where the average temperature was 25 degrees with no cloud cover as well as the hard racing from the Saturday took its toll on the squads on the Sunday. The crews took part in seven races on the day and were highly competitive without quite managing to match the success of the Saturday. There was a 2nd, a 3rd, two 4ths and a 5th for the Juniors 18s while the Junior 16s gave it their all and never gave up in their races. |
