Salthill Devon 6, St. Joesphs Girls 0 Salthill Devon U16 girls made history in Tolka Park on Sunday when they retained the WFAI U16 Cup with an emphatic display of skill, commitment and clinical finishing as they brushed aside their Dublin opponents St Josephs. This side, which only had four of last year's starting eleven available, have been a revelation all year with improvements coming at every game. After two difficult away assignments in Belmullet and Killalla these girls had the unenviable task of then being drawn away to competition favourites Stella Maris in Dublin but undaunted they came away with a magnificent 3-2 victory. In the semi-final the Salthill girls got their first home draw against a very experienced and organised Ennis outfit, Lifford United, who had won the U14 All Ireland two years prior. Despite being a goal down at half time they came back in the second half and ran out 2-1 winners. On Sunday Salthill asserted themselves from the kick off and went ahead after 18 minutes through a remarkable long-range effort from Ina Butler. Dora Gorman it 2-0 with a superb goal that began in their own box and the game was over as a contest in the second-half when skipper Becky Walsh headed home. Grace O'Donnell made it 4-0 with a delightful chip over the advancing keeper with Butler getting her second before Laura Carroll completed the rout. Salthill Devon can now complete an historic double on October 5 when they take on their city neighbours Galway Bohs in the intermediate final in Terryland Park.
