Can Kilkenny be stopped? Now, the big hurling question this week will centre around Kilkenny who are in the chase for All-Ireland quadruple titles. On Saturday at Semple Stadium in Thurles the Cats got off to a flying start in their unique quest when they captured the All-Ireland Intermediate title for the first time since 1973. They defeated Limerick on a final scoreline of 1-16 to Limerick's 0-13. Paddy Hogan, who is also on target to add an All Ireland Under 21 medal later this month, scored 1-6 for the Kilkenny side. However, spare a thought for long serving Limerick veteran Ciaran Carey who is still in search of a first All-Ireland medal. Carey, now a sprightly 38 year old, gave a solid display at full-back but in the end it didn't prove enough. Kilkenny march on in search of the All Ireland minor and senior titles this weekend and the following week will bid to add the All Ireland Under 21 title. Mayo Minors on SongLike many Mayo teams in the past this year's minor footballers travelled to Croke Park and in the All Ireland semi final wasted many chances and were eventually lucky to survive and get a replay against Kerry. On Saturday, however, in the replay at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick, Mayo gave a stunning performance as they defeated Kerry by 3-13 to 1-9. Mayo had led by 2-6 to 0-2 at one stage. Now the question is can Mayo start scoring with the same fluency at Croke Park and end those barren years? Alan Kerins Golf Classic AfricaThe Alan Kerins African Projects Golf Classic takes place at Cregmore Park Golf Club this Friday. The classic is part of ongoing initiatives by the big-hearted Galway star to raise funds for those living in the poorest parts of Zambia. It costs just €200 to enter a team. Prizes to the value of €3,000 are up for grabs. For more information, contact Mary on 091 586547. Galway intermediate camogie teamGalway intermediate camogie team will play Kilkenny in the replay of the All Ireland semi final this Saturday. In the curtain raiser to the All Ireland Under 21 semi final, Galway and Kilkenny ended deadlocked at 1-11 each after Galway led by 1-8 to 1-2 in the opening half. They still led by 1-11 to 1-7 at the three quarter stage but Kilkenny finished the stronger and came back to level. Now who will stop Kerry? They were dead and buried in the second half and just as Cork levelled Kerry fought back and won the game. Kerry people might have been nervous but what a finish as Kerry scored a goal and a point. It took a lot of character but for Cork, so much work to get back into the game and then end up at the losing end again. Tyrone have it all to do in the final. |
