Cannings feature on Road to CrokerThe Canning brothers at either end of their hurling careers, Ollie and Joe, featured on Des Cahill's Road to Croker at the weekend. Ollie who had come out of retirement to play again for Galway this year said that he was happy he came back, even though it didn't go according to plan against Cork. However he added that he was not too sure if he would be in a Galway jersey again next year. "I came back this year and I'm still trying to get over last weekend so we'll see during the summer how it goes", he said. Younger brother Joe, the teenage icon that captured the imagination of the country when scoring 2-12 against Cork, said that he felt that Galway might do better playing in Leinster, but added that Galway might not get to a Leinster final. The younger Canning said that there were good teams there and it was not all about Kilkenny. Offaly are coming good again, Wexford are still a force and Dublin are thereabouts. The teenager added: "If Galway did play one of them it would give us a better barometer of where we were at and what we could do better ad if we got beaten at least we'd have another chance and we'd learn from one of the top teams." Galvin case farceThe ongoing Paul Galvin saga continues after the Disputes Resolution Authority ordered that his case be re-heard by the Central Hearings Committee. The Kerry captain is a fighting a six-month ban for an incident involving referee Paddy Russell in the Munster football semi-final against Clare. The GAA's arbitration body found that "procedural irregularities" had occurred at the original CHC hearing. The tribunal directed "that the matter be re-heard by a newly convened and differently constituted CHC as soon as possible" before adding that the player "remains suspended in the interim period". With the DRA ending Colie Moran's suspension and allowing him to play for Dublin in the Leinster final, one wonders where the GAA's disciplinary road is going. Galvin is now likely to have his suspension halved but in the meantime the Kerry captain is left hanging out to dry. Galway hurlers set for Croke ParkTurloughmore senior hurler Walter Gill and Mullagh's Johnnie Mullins and Dermie Clarke will line out for Sligo against Louth in the Nicky Rackard Cup final next weekend. The Galway players are eligible to play with Sligo under the hurling Permit Rule. Former Galway All Star Frank Burke, who like Gill is a native of Turloughmore, was an adviser to the Sligo hurling board earlier in the year and was instrumental in using the Permit Rule to strengthen the Sligo panel. Even through Galway senior hurlers are gone, it is nice to see that there is still a Galway interest in an All Ireland senior hurling final in Croke Park. |
