Galvin Said Galway Officials needed to be in Croke Park. Kerry footballer Paul Galvin said that he wished some of the Galway officials were in Croke Park, last year, when he was in trouble and they might have reduced his suspension, referring to the reduction in the ban imposed on Mullagh players, when he spoke at the 2009 Claregalway Hotel Senior Football Dream Team Awards at which he was guest of honour. The Player of the year said that he never dreamed of being honoured in such a way this year when named as Player of the Year and added that he felt like quitting after the Cork game in Munster. Paul Galvin was special guest and made the presentations to the Dream team award winners with Managing Director of Claregalway Hotel Paul Gill. The Overall awards went to Greg Higgins of Corofin in senior and Coilín O Hogain of Naomh Anna/Leitir Móir in the Intermediate. 2009 Claregalway Hotel Senior Football Dream Team: Brian Donnellan (Mountbellew/Moylough); Kieran Fitzgerald (Corofin), Patrick Gardiner (Mountbellew/Moylough), Cathal Silke (Corofin); Alan Burke (Corofin), Damien Burke (Corofin), Declan Meehan (Caltra); Joe Bergin (Mountbellew/Moylough), Greg Higgins (Corofin); Joseph Meehan (Mountbellew/Moylough), Seán Armstrong (Salthill/Knocknacarra), Cathal Kenny (Mountbellew/Moylough); Joe Canney (Corofin), Michael Meehan (Caltra), Paul Kavanagh (Tuam Stars). 2009 Claregalway Hotel Intermediate Football Dream Team: Eoghan O Conghaile (Naomh Anna/Leitir Moir); Coilin O Hogain (Naomh Anna/Leitir Moir), Paul Gleeson (Dunmore MacHales), Jonathan Duane (St James's); Niall Coyne (Carna/Caiseal), Mark Kelly (St James'), Tomas O Griofa (Naomh Anna/Leitir Moir); Antaine O Griofa (Naomh Anna/Leitir Moir), Joe Joe Greaney (Oughterard); Michael Murphy (Kilconly), Fiachra Breathnach (Naomh Anna/Leitir Moir), Paul Conroy (St James'); Tomas Flannery (St Kerril's), Martin Coady (Oughterard), Patsy Seoighe (Naomh Anna/Leitir Moir). No All-Stars for Galway There were no All-Star awards for Galway in ladies gaelic football this year as Cork dominated the 30th All-Star awards. Three Mayo players took awards with Noelle Tierney, Martha Carter and the legendary Cora Staunton all named on the team. Staunton collected her seventh award, to equal the record of her colleague Christina Heffernan who also took seven awards to the county. For the record Galway's first All-Star award winner was Bernadette Stankard of Cappataggle in 1981. Intermediate classics Tynagh/Abbey/Duniry edged out Meelick/Eyrecourt in a classic county intermediate hurling final on Saturday after extra time. The game was decided when the winners put almost all of their team on the goal line for an injury time 20-meter free when Meelick/Eyrecourt needed a goal. Tynagh/Abbey/Duniry had no time to celebrate as they had to play and won against Ballyhaunis in the Connacht club final on the following day. Meanwhile the Intermediate footballers of Naomh Anna/Leitir Moir also produced a classic against Westport. In extra time the Galway side also won, but there was no luck for Skehana junior hurlers who lost against Sligo champions Calry/St Josephs. |
