The Bal' Walk
It is now several decades ago that Cahalan Jewellers of Ballinasloe became the specialists in providing medals for Galway championship action when it was run by Mullagh natives Andy Cahalan and his wife Maureen. After the unexpected passing of Andy, Maureen was left to pick up the pieces and in addition to continuing to run a successful business, following the death of her husband she became a leading light in fundraising activities in the east Galway area.
On Sunday next, Maureen is once again to the forefront in the annual 10k and 5k Bal Walk which is set to commence at 10am from Gullane's Hotel Main Street Ballinasloe. The Bal 10k walk helps charities continue their vital work and this year's chosen charity is Console, which helps people who are bereaved through suicide. Maureen Cahalan has addressed various gatherings in the county in recent years on positive thinking and positive action and invites anyone who wishes to join to come along to the Bal Walk. Some people do the 5k part of the walk while others go on to do the 10k, and everyone gets a certificate. Everyone has a great time, from the young of foot to the young at heart with all encouraged to take part and the craic and camaraderie on the walk helps the time to fly by. Refreshments are being supplied and Gullane's Hotel will be hosting a refreshment reception on completion of the Bal Walk.
First goals
The final stages of the championship often bring out the best and the worst and on Sunday last both Corofin and Mountbellew/Moylough have reasons to reflect on the games for different reasons. Reigning champions Corofin had gone through this year's championship without scoring a goal and on Sunday last as they took on Salthill/Knocknacarra they scored two of them. Kieran Comer and Michael Comer both hit majors in the opening half and with the skillful finish of both scores, it was hard to imagine that they hadn't scored in this year's championship. However Mountbellew/Moylough have different reasons to remember last Sunday's semi-final as it was the first and only time in this year's championship campaign that they conceded a goal, with Caltra's Michael Meehan breaking their positive defence before half-time on Sunday last.
Carnmore lose out
After the weekend hurling games, Portumna, Gort, Loughrea and Beagh all advance to quarter-finals of the club hurling championship. Carnmore go into the relegation battle with Cappataggle, Craughwell and Tommie Larkins while Athenry and Mullagh as well as Ardrahan and Liam Mellows ended deadlocked and have to meet again. Other games involving Clarinbridge, Kinvara, Killimordaly and Castlegar have yet to be played.
Portumna lead goal rush
With three championship matches still to play Portumna are clearly ahead in the goal rush. Portumna scored five goals on Saturday to bring their total to 15 in this year's championship.
