The Connacht Prom Swims for Men and Ladies will be held on Saturday at 3.00pm from the Blackrock Diving Tower. The swimmers will race from Blackrock to Seapoint as they have done for the last thirty years. This race is the last of the Summer swimming season.


The first annual Sean McGovern School of Hurling gets under way at the St. Mary’s Grounds, Carnaun from 10.00am to 12.00 noon on Saturday. The camp is sponsored by Joyces Supermarkets. It will continue on Saturday the 15th, 22nd and 29th September. It is geared towards boys aged 6 to 14 years living in the Athenry parish. The Athenry All Stars Eugene Cloonan, Joe Rabbitte and P.J. Molloy and many more of the club’s stars will assist in the coaching. A lovely idea to remember a lovely man, a hurling man, Sean McGovern.
Tuam Celtic Soccer Academy catering for boys and girls from 5 to 11 years old will kick off on Saturday week in Celtic Park Tuam. Registration will start at 10.30am and coaching at 11.00am. Details from the Academy co ordinator Seamus Sweeney @ 086 8155112.
Bon Voyage to the members of the Galway Association who compete in the Chicago Half Marathon on Sunday @ 7.30am local time. Jimmy Kennedy has a party of 42 willing and able to complete the course, about half and half men and women. The travelling party includes Chief Super Donal Ó Cualáin and Padraig Ó Ceidigh of Aer Arann, the main sponsors. Good luck. The Corinthians Golf Society Captain’s Prize, Mick Roche’s Prize was held in Ballinasloe on Saturday. Sean Brennan was best of the day with Cammie Gallagher and Paddy Flynn next. Margaret O’Neill was best of the Ladies with Margot Cunningham and Mary Grealy next.

Tuam Golf Club hold a 2007 development Golf Classic tomorrow, Friday and Saturday, teams of four and the time sheet is with Mary on 093 28993.
Welcome to the Galway Association Golf Society of London who continue their sortie home with a visit to the Gort club today, Tuam tomorrow, Oughterard on Friday and on to Mountbellew on Saturday. Busy.
The Rugby World Cup starts on Friday. (8.00pm Irish time). The first game will be of great interest to Ireland when France play Argentina. Ireland meet Namibia on Sunday (K/O 7.00pm Irish time).
The regular Sunday session re-commences at Westside Tennis Courts on Sept 9th at 2pm. All are welcome, beginners, improvers, juniors and adults.

There will be a signing-up session for Westside Tennis Club at 2pm, but players can join any Sunday they turn up.

Mike Geraghty, the Chairman of Westside Tennis Club & Galway Community Tennis Initiative, says they are looking forward to the return of last term’s participants and to meeting many new players for what has now become a year round activity and a sport for life!


The Diary wishes Richard Donovan well for the 100K European and World Championships in Winschoten Holland on Saturday. But this time he doesn’t run but is the manager of the Irish team. The team includes two winners of the North Pole Marathon Thomas Maguire Fermanagh (2007) and Michael Collins, a Limerick man (2006). It also includes two winners of the Connemara Ultra Marathon Martin Rea from Belfast and Helena Crossan from Donegal. 100K? 62.1 miles!
