Page 1 of 3 Joe Lyons of the Galway Golf Club gets his first international cap today when he tees off in the home internationals at the Co. Louth club. It has been a most remarkable and memorable twelve months for Lyons winning the Irish Senior Cup this time last year and the Barton Shield last week with his club. He is the first and only Galway clubman to win the West of Ireland in April of this year and was also runner/up in the South of Ireland and now he gets his first cap! It doesn't get much better. Well done Joe. Michael Kennedy, Galway's Mr. Camogie was laid to rest on Monday in Ballymacward. He died suddenly on Thursday at his home in Castleblakeney. His contribution to Galway sport will probably never be adequately quantified. He brought tremendous success to the Pearses Camogie club winning five All Ireland Club titles. May he rest in peace. The most important thing about the Ireland Georgia game in the Rugby World Cup was to get the win and a bonus point. Well Ireland did win but it was Georgia that took a bonus point! A Galway sportsperson continuing to excel at the highest level is Michelle Fahy, a long time member of the Irish Basketball team was honoured last week with the captaincy against Iceland on Saturday.
Well done to the Ladies of the Galway & District League who beat Wilton of Cork in the semi-final of the FAI Cup 4-1 (aet), imagine three goals in extra time. The Galway girls now meet Raheny of Dublin in the final on Sunday 14th October. We forgot to tell you that Gerry Ryan and Veronica Colleran won the Killimor Road Race last Sunday week. Jimmy Kennedy of the Galway Association, there's a thing, it is no longer the Galway Association, it is now called Ability West, concentrating on the abilities of their clients rather than using any more negative words about disabilities. Anyway back to Jimmy Kennedy. He brought home his 37 competitors safe and happy from the Chicago Half Marathon and raised 65,000 euro for Ability West in the process. All the Ability West athletes finished well with Mary Beatty Inverin, Dave Gallagher Churchfields Salthill and Mary Moran of Craughwell setting the pace. Tough going too, as it was 28 degrees at 7.00am in the morning at the start! The same organisation is organising a golf outing in the Galway Golf Club in support of ‘our next door neighbours in Blackrock House' on Saturday week 29th September. It will be a Ladies and Gents single Stableford open to all.
