Galway Swimming Club have a new Chairman from their AGM last week. He is Des Moore. A new chairman for an old club! GSC was founded in 1936. And a new impetus is added to the club with the arrival of coach Pearse McGuigan, a former Irish champion at Individual Medley and Butterfly. A native of Strabane he believes that the GSC has the potential to be top of the pops or certainly in the top three of Irish swimming clubs. The club enjoyed a good innings at the Limerick Invitation Meet over the weekend. The club brought a compliment of 39 swimmers who competed in 200 swims, recorded 160 personal bests and brought home 8 gold, 9 silver and 9 bronze medals. There were a number of excellent performances notably from Dáirne Ryan, Saoirse McGrath, Elaine Carey, David O'Sullivan, Katie McKnight, Andrew Moore, Daniel Scully, Brian O'Sullivan and Jasper Byrne.

The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club hold another big promotion on Saturday at the Black Box Theatre. 14 bouts with fighters from Switzerland, Khazikstan, Romania and of course Ireland and Galway's own European champion Cathal Manning topping the bill. He meets Myles Price from Kilkenny who enjoys an outstanding record in the ring. The doors will open at 6.00pm with the first bout of the evening at 7.00pm. And the whole affair will be over by 10.00/10.30 to allow plenty of time for other Saturday night activities! Tickets from Sally Longs, Redlight Records, Town Hall and club members. Details 087 8119227.

Galway United Supporters Trust will be reserving a table at the upcoming Galway United Black and White Ball at the Radisson Hotel on Saturday week, the 23rd February. Anyone interested in taking a seat at the table should contact Ronan Coleman @ 087 6972823.

2008 GUST membership forms will be available at Friday evening's friendly against Limerick 37 in Terryland Park (K/O 7.45pm). GUST merchandise (jackets and polo shirts) will also be on sale at the match.

This week's GUST Lotto Draw will be held in Becketts Bar Bohermore on Sunday night, (17th) for a jackpot of 4,500 euro. Annual subscriptions to the GUST Lotto Draw are on sale @ 80 euro. Subscription forms are available at www.galwayunitedfc.ie where supporters can also play GUST Lotto on-line. All paid subscribers by Sunday 2nd March will be included in a draw for a Galway United season ticket.

Sure there has been much criticism of the Galway Clare NHL game in the Pearse Stadium on Sunday, nearly all to do with pernickety referee Seamus Roche of Tipperary. But then refs and rules is a much wider question beyond the comprehension of this diarist. What this diarist does know is that if you want to win matches and hopefully an All Ireland you need forwards who can score and free takers who can take the chances. So what about Galway's full forward line? Between the three of them they scored 2 goals and 18 points, Ger Farragher (1-11, 9f), Iarla Tannion (0-5) and Aongus Callanan (1-2). It would be very easy to get our sporting moment of the week from the game even from the programme where Rahoon Newcastle were credited with two of the starting line-up, Tony Óg at full back and Aongus Callanan at corner forward, honest that's what it said!

But we go back to last Wednesday the 6th February for our sporting moment of the week. That was Mickey Sport's birthday!
