Page 1 of 2 They had to put the 'House Full' sign up on the Galway Lawn Tennis club door on Friday night as family and friends gathered to celebrate the 80th birthday of the Galway Sporting Institution Mickey Walshe. Affectionately known as 'Little Sport' and in some quarters abbreviated to 'Sport'. Mickey Sport's interest and contribution to Galway sport is legendary. He had a particular grá for rugby, soccer, tennis and hockey. But in truth his sporting interests were catholic in taste. Mickey should always be remembered for the organisation of the County Galway Sports Stars of the Year Awards in the Sacre Coeur Hotel for probably thirty years or more. On Friday evening, past President of the GLTC and Tennis Ireland Mick McCann said the customary well-chosen words to a most receptive gathering. A milestone in Galway sport. Happy birthday Mickey. The history of the famed Derrydonnell AC is to be put on paper. Jimmy Kennedy is to co-ordinate the project. Naturally he is on the lookout for any info of the period 1953 to 1978, not just athletics but also the wider social aspect. Jimmy lives at Knockarol, Ballydavid, Athenry. 087 2488845. There are no changes at the top table of Galway City Harriers Athletic Club with one exception where Brian Geraghty stepped down as president after, oh I don't know how long, and is replaced by Oliver Geraghty, no relation good choice. All the other officers stay put but then if it is not broken don't fix it. GCH added two more All Ireland champions to their already impressive national standing on Sunday in Wexford. Martin McEvilly won the Masters V55 Cross Country Championship for the fifth year in a row! Remarkable! Can't do any better than that. You see next year he must compete at V60 level. At the other end of the age ladder young Orla Ní Mhuircheartaigh won the National Intermediate Cross Country Championship. |
