Galway United 1 Skipper Wesley Charles was once again the Galway United hero as he struck for the decisive goal which gave Tony Cousins' men a priceless victory at Terryland Park on Friday evening. The win greatly eases United's relegation concerns and a crowd of 2,200 went away from Terryland relieved. A 40 minute floodlit failure disrupted the evening, but United skipper Charles remained calm and composed when presented with a match winning opportunity. Greg O'Halloran's corner fell kindly for Charles, who blasted home from 10 yards after a Derry player had blatantly handled in the box but a penalty was not awarded. This was only United's third home win of the season but none have been more important. The hard-working Ciaran Foley almost put United ahead in the opening half, while the impressive John Lester and Derek Glynn also went close. For a time it seemed that the match might be abandoned when the lights went out but it was United who sparked two minutes after the resumption for the decisive score. "Nobody wanted the game to be held up and even though we scored shortly after the break I don't think this break benefited either team," said United boss Cousins. He introduced Phillip Reilly for Glynn straight after the goal in a bid to crowd midfield. "We had talked about this, we said that if we did take a lead that we would go with one up front and try to tighten up the midfield. We discussed this during the break in the second half and all the players know what they had to do and they all had a game plan to stick to. It worked out well and Derry were restricted to very few scoring chances," Cousins added. Galway United: Rogers; Keane, Nootimer, Lester, Charles; Murphy (Robson, 61, Cooke, 65), Foley, O'Halloran, O'Brien; O'Flynn, Glynn (Reilly, 68).
