Old Connacht foes such as Narbonne (€6m), Beziers (€6.4m) and Pau (€6.4) are struggling to get into the promotion race.

The IRFU have done well to keep so many Irish players at home but how long more, as the professional game develops, can they hope to compete for players with those sort of figures.

THE WEATHER took its toil on the AIB League action at the weekend with Corinthians, Connemara and Buccaneers all seeing their games go by the wayside.

Galwegians, who top four hopes took a fatal hit with a 10-0 loss away to UCD, must have wished their game fell victim as well.

All four are back in action this weekend.

Galwegians head to Shannon, while Buccaneers travel to play Suttonians. Both Division Three sides are at home with Connemara entertaining Bruff and Corinthians hosting Ards.

THE SCENE is set for the quarter finals of the Connacht Tribune Schools Senior Cup next week. Champions Garbally College will travel to 'The Bish' in Galway, while the city will stage another quarter-final when Colaiste Iognaid meet Calasanctius College.

Last year's semi finalists, Clifden Community School, will travel to take on last year's Junior Cup winners, Marist College.

There will be an all-Sligo quarter-final when Summerhill College take on Sligo Grammar School.

THERE WAS a timely boost for Connacht rugby this week with the announcement that Magnetti Foods is to supply the squad and the academy players with gourmet Italian food. It is good to see new companies coming on board to sponsor local teams.
