Connacht's win over Newcastle Falcons wasn't the only stand-out result in the weekend's European action. Glasgow Warriors, defeated in the Sportsground the previous week, failed to score a try for the second game running, but still did enough to stun Biarritz 9-6 in the Heineken Cup. Interestingly, the match at Firhill was watched by 2,194, the smallest crowd to watch a Heineken Cup match at the weekend but not the smallest this season. That also came at Firhill in the last round when 1,722 turned up to watch Glasgow defeat Viadana 41-31. By the way, there were 2,856 paying customers at the Sportsground on Friday night. CONNACHT'S FINAL two pool games in this season's European Challenge Cup will be finalised after next Sunday's game away to Newcastle. The ERC have held back on confirming the final two rounds of games in the pool after Christmas until they decide which games might be televised. Connacht will conclude their campaign with a trip to Spain to play Cetransa El Salvador on the second weekend in January, and then at home to Brive the following weekend. TWO OF the games involving the four Connacht teams fell by the wayside at the weekend but the two who were in action notched good results. Galwegians, with Connacht's new signing Liam Bibo in top form, scored a very good 23-15 win away to bottom side Greystones having fallen behind in the opening half. And Corinthians put in a resilient display to edge out Naas 11-10 at Cloonacauneen. THAT WIN by Corinthians will give them a timely boost as they head westward this Saturday for a joust with Connemara at the Monastery Field, the home side having rested when their game against Ards fell victim to the weather in Clifden. Galwegians are on the road again, heading north to play Dungannon, while in Division Two Belfast Harlequins will be travelling in the opposite direction to meet Buccaneers at Dubarry Park. A NEW league has been set up to further develop womens' rugby. The Connacht Women's Development League started last month and allows new teams such as Creggs, Westport, NUIG and West Offaly Lions the opportunity to play competitive rugby. The league will continue after Christmas with the finals taking place next March. Clubs looking to start a women's side and are looking for challenge matches against new teams can contact the Connacht Branch at 091 561568 for more information. IT IS now certainly a two-horse race in the Connacht Junior League with Monivea making it seven from seven with a 33-0 thumping of Buccaneers. Four bonus points see Monivea, the holders, sitting on 32 points but Galwegians kept in touch with a 27-7 win from their short trip to play third-placed Corinthians. The Cloonacauneen side are now thirteen points adrift of their old rivals, with Galwegians four off pace-setters Monivea. |
