Galway 3-20
Cork 0-20

Galway continued their free-scoring preparation for next month's championship opener against Antrim with an impressive nine-point defeat of Cork in an entertaining senior hurling challenge on Sunday evening in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

After bagging three goals in a defeat to Clare the week before, Joe Canning took up where he left off by rattling the Cork rearguard early on. He was involved in creating a number of Galway points in the opening period and also bagged 1-1 himself.

Eugene Cloonan and Ger Farragher were also prominent as Galway settled the quicker, while Alan Kerins and Iarla Tannion also fired points as the forward unit linked well.

For Cork's part, Ben and Jerry O'Connor were at the heart of much of the Rebels' best work and Ronan Curran showed flashes of his customary class from the wing-back berth.

Galway led by five points at the break and while Cathal Naughton inspired a Cork rally in the second half, they were never able to pull level with Ger Loughnane's side.

In truth, the contest lost much of its momentum in that second period, as a series of substitutions disrupted the flow of both sides.

With a quarter of the game remaining, the Tribesmen had maintained the five-point advantage. And when Ger Farragher drilled home the game's second goal, the match was over as a contest.

Alan Kerins brought his tally to three points as the attacking unit continued to impress and Aonghus Callanan added a third goal in injury time to extend the winning margin.

The Galway camp now turn their attentions to further challenge games against Wexford and Limerick over the next week as preparations intensify for the championship.
