Moycullen edged out Titans 60-52 in the Senior Men's National League in their first derby game of the season on Saturday in Renmore.

A bumper crowd filled the sports hall to capacity to witness Galway's finest ball players going head to head.

Both sides started the game very defensively determined to contain the most threatening of players. Danny Finn made the first hoop for Titans on his way to becoming the game's top scorer with 17 points but Moycullen led by six at the end of the first quarter.

Titans unravelled in the second quarter through lack of concentration and extended their lead to 24 points.

Mindaugus Kurcenkovas playing on point for Moycullen had a huge influence controlling the pace of the game, directing the offence and running the fast break.

At half-time Titans got their opportunity to re-group and the response took Moycullen by surprise. Titans hit the floor on fire and went on a fantastic 9-0 run with scores from Darren Callanan, Conall MacMichael and Paulius Peldzius. The Moycullen coach Zbigniew Mardon called a timeout to assess events but the momentum was with Titans now and the scoring margin reduced rapidly. A three-pointer from Titans Danny Finn ensured this game was going down to the wire. Titans blasted through the third quarter notching up double scores on Moycullen.

In the final quarter Titans managed to reduce the deficit to six points but Moycullen held on for victory at the end of a fine game.

Both clubs are already looking forward to their next clash on Saturday December 12th in Killanin.

Moycullen top scorers: Cian Nihill 15; John Cunningham 11; Mindaugus Kurcenkovas 9.
Titans top scorers: Danny Finn 17; Conall MacMichael 15; Darren Callanan 11.
