Caherlistrane 2-6 Two well-taken second half goals by corner-forward Eric Monahan sent Caherlistrane through to the semi-finals of the Galway SFC after a keenly contested quarter-final at Pearse Stadium on Saturday. The Connemara side needed three games to overcome Claregalway in the previous round and it was thought that the extra matches might have given them an advantage against a Caherlistrane outfit that slumped to a shock league defeat at the hands of Killanin last weekend. It didn’t work our that way though as Pete Warren, twice an All-Ireland winning Galway selector under John O’Mahony, had Caherlistrane perfectly primed and they duly wore down an eager and determined An Cheathru Rua side that lacked forward power. Galway star Cormac Bane led the way for the winners with two points in each half and they shaded the opening period, 0-4 to 0-2, with Barry McCabe and Rory Glynn also finding the range. Cillin de Paor, who scored after just fifteen seconds, and Risteard O hEadhra who pointed late on were the An Cheathru Rua marksmen. When play resumed Caherlistrane quickly took a stranglehold on the game. Eric Monahan twice blasted to the net in the opening six minutes and although they were under pressure for much of the half they held on for a comfortable win despite a flurry of points by Cillin de Paor and Niall O Briain.
