Galway's first All-Ireland minor football win in over two decades was the highlight of the football year, the Football Board secretary John Power will tell delegates to next week' annual Convention. ![]() HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR . . . The All-Ireland minor final win over Derry has been described as the highlight of the year by Football Board secretary John Power in his address to next Monday night?s annual Convention. Power describes the minor victory by Alan Mulholland's charges as a 'magnificent achievement' that augurs well for the future. "Looking back at some of our performances earlier in the year in the Connacht Minor League one could not have forecast that come the third Sunday in September we would be All Ireland minor champions. "I have no doubt but that it was through hard work and determination by the players and management that this achievement came about. "I would like to congratulate Alan Mulholland, Donal O Fatharta, Padraic Coyne, John David Carney and all the players involved in bringing back honour and glory to Galway. "Some of these players will surely go on to greater glory with Galway in the Under-21 and senior grades in the years ahead and I wish them well," he says. But Power says there was enormous disappointment when Galway went down to Sligo in the Connacht senior football final. "Our loss to Sligo in the Connacht final was very disheartening because this is a game we should have won. "While we had a good victory over Mayo in Pearse Stadium our performances after that were not great culminating in our defeat by Meath. "I would like to thank Peter Forde and his management team for all their work on behalf of Galway football and wish the best of luck to Liam Sammon and his management team in the year ahead," says Power. A dozen motions are down for discussion with one-third of them dealing with the ever contentious U-21 grade, while the Fr Griffins club want a 'Galway City' team entered in next year's county senior football championship. This would be comprised of intermediate and junior teams from the city. |
