Derry City 1, Mervue United 3

Mervue recorded their second win of the season when they became the first team to win at the Brandywell in the new eircom A league.

Mervue had to make five changes to the starting line up due to injuries, and gave championship debuts to Colie Kelly and Brendan O Connor.

Mervue took the lead on 18 minutes when Mike Tierney split the Derry defence with a pass for Rory Gaffney to race onto and the Tuam man dispatched to the net from 15 yards.

Mervue were in the ascendency for most of the first half and added a second goal on 25 minutes when Gaffney cleverly flicked on a throw in and Dave Goldbey headed home at the far post.

After the break Mervue added a third in the 60th minute when Dave Goldbey raced onto a kick out from Mervue goalkeeper Brian O Donoghue to score his fifth goal of the current season.

Injuries to Brendan O Connor and man of the match Mike Tierney meant that Mervue had a few anxious moments in the final quarter and Derry pulled one back through Lee Roddy on 72 mins.

Overall this was a great team performance from Mervue who travel to Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United in their next two league matches.
