The roads around Athenry have been a hive of activity in recent weeks as the final arrangements are being made for the National10k Road Race that will take place in and around the town on Sunday at 2pm.

This year's event is set to feature the most competitive field assembled anywhere in the country this year. Amongst the favourites in the men's race will be local athlete Paul McNamara, twice a winner of this championship in the past.

McNamara hopes enthusiastic home support will boost all the local runners.

"We hope to have up to fifty local runners taking part in the event wearing the colours of Athenry AC. It will be a great help to all the Galway runners if we have a big crowd cheering us on. We're going to do our level best to represent Athenry and Galway well in the race and we hope to be able to give people something to cheer for."

As well as the Athenry contingent, clubs from Loughrea, Craughwell, Tuam, Galway City and Castlegar will also send strong teams.

With the recent surge of interest in running for health, fun and fitness in the county, a big turn-out on the day is likely. The race organisers are particularly keen to see as many Fit4Life group members as possible take part in the race and runners of all standards are welcome.
