The success of reality TV Show The Ultimate Fighter and the general availability of the Bravo channel domestically has resulted in an upsurge in interest in Mixed Martial Arts.

ImageMany are unaware that Ireland has been competing in this new brand of combat athletics for many years now and boasts many of Europe’s top fighters. On October 6 Ultimate Fighting comes to the Black Box in Galway and for many supporters it will be their first chance to see this sport live.

For all of the local fighters it will be their first time fighting in front of their home crowd. Mark O'Toole, who fights under the ring moniker "Manslaughter" has the honour of headlining the "Tribal Warfare" show against a tough opponent from Dublin.

Mark's fighting career has already taken him to the top flight in the UK.

"It will be great for Galway people to see us in action as most of our fights are in Dublin and the UK. It just means that I am even more determined to win this fight,” said Mark.

Both Mark and his training partner Tom Haddock, also lining out at the Tribal Warfare show, are members of a professionally managed fight team that has already boosted two of its fighters into the UFC, the biggest event in the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), and both Galwaymen are quickly attracting notice that might earn them a spot in the UFC as well, the show which started it all.

At the top of the under-card, Galway's Tom Kelly challenges Gerard McNichol for the Irish Welterweight Title. Tom has been a lifelong martial artist, training for many years in Thai boxing before making the move to ultimate fighting. Currently in a training camp in Thailand preparing he hopes to bring some more silverware back to Galway.

Other Galway fighters lining out at Tribal Warfare, fighting out of the Point Blank Submissions club in Parkmore, include Vinny Connolly, Simon Dring, Tom Kelly — challenging at the Galway show for the Irish Welterweight Title — Dave King, John Murphy and Kevin Moran. At Tribal Warfare Micháel MacSweeney of Spiddal will fight for the newly created Irish Junior Title against Matt Taylor of Antrim. The Junior division is for those under 18 interested in fighting in MMA and is further proof of the growth of the Sport.

Tickets for the Tribal Warfare event are available from Town Hall box office, Red Light Records and Point Blank Submissions on sale for 25 euro.
