Padraig Marrey took the honours again as almost 40 riders lined out in sunny Monivea on Sunday for the fifth round of the Connacht Mountain Bike League.

Breand?n Monaghan of Athenry loses no time on the corner during his U10 race in the Connacht Mountain Bike League at Monivea on Sunday.

Conditions were tough on the testing course set out by Tuam's Realt CC. Heavy rain had flooded several sections of the course, and there was plenty of mud around to sap the strength of the riders and test their bike-handling skills.

The senior field of 19 riders took off at a lightning pace and a crash on the first corner held up most of the pack.

Marrey, from the Murphy & Gunn club, was quick to capitalise, already opening up a healthy lead on Donncha O'Brien of West Coast Wheelers by the second of the six laps.

O'Brien battled to the end to take second and Steven Franzoni of Lakeside Wheelers made the trip from Mullingar worthwhile by finishing third.

The WCW duo of Mike Flanagan ? who is improving all the time ? and Brian O'Donnell took fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of David Dowdall of Dolmen Wheelers.

Racing in the underage categories was as intense as ever. In the U10 section, the impressive Breandán Monaghan from Athenry was first over the line, again showing some of the older riders how to corner fast.
