Five weeks into my training regime and at last I am feeling more positive about the task that lies ahead of me. For the first time since I started training I feel I am capable of completing the 8Km run without ubearable difficulty. Finally I feel I have turned a corner and can only progress from here.

Weather conditions were far more favourable this week which of course helped to keep my training on track. A few mornings during the week I could be seen out on the streets at the unearthly hour of 7am and even earlier on some occasions.

I was pleasantly surpised that I felt more energised in spite of having such early starts. This made me realise that physically my body was capable of doing alot more than I would previously have thought.

Last week I mentioned that I was going to join up with the Galway City Harriers Fit for Life Group which meet and train every Tuesday and Thursday evenings. I learned the importance of wam ups, stretching and cooling down exercises and I have now incorporated these techniques into my own training schedule. It is quite advantageous to run with a group such as this as the enthusiasm of others helped to motivate and encourage me to keep on going.

One of the advantages of living in Galway has to be the proximity of the sea with its immensely popular promenade. Twice during the week I availed of the prom as a training ground. When the sun shines, this long time favourite walking route is unbeatable. Starting off at Blackrock I jogged the length of the prom and as far as the Claddagh before returning to kick the wall back at Blackrock in true Galway style. This distance covered has been the longest I have done so far and it gave me a great sense of achievement. It has been by far the most enjoyable run and it will no doubt become an integral part of my training regime over the next few weeks.

I made a couple of changes to my training this past week which seem to have paid off. I feel more positive about the challenge ahead since making these changes and I am finding the training to be more enjoyable than ever.

So much so, I might even continue with it after the Streets of Galway Race is over. However, thats not a promise just an idea!!
