This weekend sees the senior football championship in action once more, with the first round losers vying for a berth in the next round of the qualifiers. The biggest shock in the first round was Corofin's defeat at the hands of Michael Breathnachs, but the county champions were the lucky side that received a bye into the second qualifying round and will face one of this weekend's winners.

Saturday evening's action kicks off in Tuam Stadium with the double-header clash of St Brendan's and Kilkerrin/Clonberne; and St Michael's and Killererin.

St Brendan's received a five-point beating from An Cheathru Rua and will hope to get their championship back on track against a Kilkerrin/Clonberne outfit that were well beaten by Mountbellew/Moylough in the first round.

In the day's second match, intermediate champions St Michael's face a Killereran side that will no doubt be smarting from a 1-12 to 2-8 defeat at the hands of Jimmy Heverin's Salthill-Knocknacarra. Sunday sees another double-header, this time in Pearse Stadium where Claregalway play N.U.I.G and Killanin face Barna.

Killanin lost out by a singe point to Glenamady last time out, while opponents Bearna fell to intermediate champions of two years ago, Moycullen. Last year's county finalists Cortoon Shamrocks were losers against a Michael Meehan led Caltra, but face another tough task against Annaghdown in Tuam Stadium on Sunday.
