Killererin the side to beat as club championship kicks off

The Galway senior football championship begins this weekend when the race for the Frank Fox Cup begins in earnest a week after Liam Sammon's Tribesmen made a successful start to their campaign. All the teams will be hoping to beat last year's champions Killererin as a new campaign brings renewed hope for all the clubs..

There are a few interesting ties in the opening round of this year's championship. Killererin, whose strength was recently illustrated with a county U-21 title, will meet All Ireland intermediate champions Moycullen in what should be a mouth-watering tie.

There will be an all-Connemara affair between Carraroe and Michael Breathnachs. Caltra will be hoping Galway sharpshooter Michael Meehan can guide them to a win over Caherlistrane. Newly promoted Monivea Abbey will take on Tuam Stars, while Corofin will meet Menlough.

Last year's county senior football finalists Milltown will take nothing for granted when they go head to head with Barna.

Looking at this year's championship draw you would have to fancy Killererin, Milltown, Caltra, Salthill, to progress to the second round, but championship football can be completely different ball game.

As we have seen in recent years most of the big names like Corofin and Killererin will not be far off the pace, but Milltown showed last years that they are a team on the up.

The likes of Diarmuid Blake and Darren Mullaghy showed their true colours for their club last year and no doubt new figures will emerge this season.
