Padraic Joyce has been appointed Galway captain for this year's championship and the former Footballer of the Year is hoping it will be a case of fourth time lucky! Joyce was told in training last week that he will lead the side into battle this season and it is the fourth time he will captain his county. As usual in Galway the winners of the club championship have the honour of naming the county captain and with Joyce inspiring Killererin to success last year, it was always on the cards he would be nominated. "It is a great honour and one that I hold in high regard. To be honest, I would be in favour of a manager naming his own captain but that is not the system here in Galway. "The most important thing for me is to be playing and it is going well at the moment. We made progress during the league and all the attention now is on Roscommon on Sunday," said the 31-year old. Joyce was first named Galway captain in 2000 following a county final win by Killererin, but he was denied All-Ireland glory when Kerry defeated them in a final replay. Joyce, who won All-Ireland medals in 1998 and 2001, was again denied as skipper by Kerry in the quarter-finals in 2002 after being nominated by county champions Annaghdown, while Cork put paid to his captaincy hopes at the same stage in 2005. "Maybe this time it will be fourth time lucky but we will be taking it a game at a time and that starts with Roscommon on Sunday," said the three-times All-Star. |
