Cork City 3 Galway United were terribly unfortunate not to register a precious result in Turners Cross last Friday night, after taking a two goal lead early in the second half, only for the hosts to overpower them and secure victory by the narrowest of margins. ON TARGET . . . Galway United striker Derek Glynn who netted twice against Cork City in Turner's Cross on Friday night. Two excellent goals for Derek Glynn for United were cancelled out by a brace from Eircom league top scorer Dave Mooney and a fine strike from Denis Behan. United also had Alvin Rouse red-carded in his first league start of the season, after conceding a fairly innocuous penalty. United opened the scoring after 34 minutes with a wonderful strike from Glynn. Gary Deegan won possession in his own half and floated a wonderful pass over the top for Glynn to chase. He duly won the race, and from a seemingly impossible angle chipped the ball over Michael Devine and into the corner of the net, sending United in at half time with a slim advantage. Only one minute of the second half had elapsed when Glynn doubled United's advantage, with a carbon copy of the first goal. This time John Lester provided the ammunition, but Glynn – who has spent large periods of the season on the bench – clipped the ball beautifully and it sailed over the hapless Devine. This was the elixir that Cork needed and they sprung immediately to life. They halved the deficit 12 minutes later through Mooney – a fine strike from four yards out – which beat Rouse at the near post, and equalised after 62 minutes through Behan. After some fine interplay featuring Colin Healy and Joe Gamble, Behan collected a Liam Kearney pass and stroked past Rouse from the corner of the area, sending Turners Cross into raptures. Cork completed the ultimate comeback on 79 minutes, when Mooney grabbed his second of the game – and his 15th of the season – to give Cork the maximum points. Referee Neil Doyle had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, after Rouse hauled down John O'Flynn on his way around the Barbados international, and also had no problem in presenting Rouse with a red card. Gary Rogers was sprung from the bench, but Mooney drilled home the penalty for victory and deny a battling Galway United side.
