Ger Loughnane's championship hopes have received a set-back with promising young midfielder Kevin Hynes likely to be out for the summer after suffering a broken jaw.

Hynes suffered the injury playing for Sarsfields against Kiltormer in the Galway SHC at the weekend and could be out of action for four months.

Hynes, who captained Galway to the U-21 All-Ireland title last year, was due to go for surgery on Monday.

"The extent of the injury should become more clear and we might have a better idea how long he will be out for. But he is a loss as he had done very well during the league," said Galway hurling board secretary John Fahey.

Hynes was drafted into the Galway side during the league campaign and held down a midfield berth as the Tribesmen reached the final.

He continued his impressive form for Sarsfields in the Galway county title race but it now looks as if his championship debut will have to be put on hold.
