The race for the 2007 county senior hurling championship resumes this weekend when the four preliminary quarter-finals will be down for decision. Three of the encounters will be derby affairs with Castlegar and Liam Mellowes going to battle for the right to play Gort in the quarter-finals.
Mullagh and Kiltormer clash with the victors set to meet in-form Kinvara in the last eight.
Meanwhile, Ger Loughnane has told Galway hurling bosses that he expects to bring in a lot of new players next year to end the county’s 20 year All-Ireland famine. The controversial boss delivered his end-of-season report to delegates at a meeting of Galway Hurling Board last week and he was keeping a close eye on the Galway U-21s. He said he will also be monitoring the closing stages of the Galway hurling championship in a bid to strengthen his squad. Loughnane’s has still not been confirmed as Galway boss for next year but that is expected to be ratified at next month’s meeting of the Galway Hurling Board. Hurling Board chairman Miko Ryan said that last week’s meeting was only to hear the manager’s report at senior and minor and that the managers of these teams along with the U-21s and intermediate would be ratified at next month’s meeting.
“Ger outlined his plans for next year, how he hopes to bring in some new players but his ratification will not be dealt with until next month,” said Ryan. |
