Galway hurling has received a huge boost with the green light being given to a new €8 million training centre of excellence.

Galway County Council has granted planning permission for the ambitious development near Athenry. The proposed state-of-the-art facility had encountered some planning difficulties but these have now been sorted out.

The development will include six pitches, one of which will be an all-weather floodlit facility. The site at Mountain South will also include dressing rooms, gymnasiums, meeting rooms, hurling walls and ancillary facilities.

Galway Hurling Board secretary John Fahey said that the board hoped to start development as soon as possible.

"It will be a huge boost to hurling. All of our county teams will be based there and it will be available to clubs.

"Schools will also benefit from it. Second level schools regularly encounter difficulty in securing grounds as they are playing most of their matches when pitches are at their worst during the winter," said Fahey.
