Galway United face a huge eircom League encounter on Friday evening against Derry City as the relegation issue becomes tighter with three games remaining. United's valuable point away to Bray Wanderers on Friday night was offset by Longford winning in UCD and, crucially, Waterford going to Sligo and coming away with a 2-1 win. That means Waterford are just a point behind ? United travel to Waterford on Friday week ? with the result that Tony Cousins' men need to win against Derry City on Friday evening. The situation became more precarious on Monday night when Longford defeated Bray 1-0 to leave just three points between United and automatic relegation. United have only won twice at Terryland Park all season but victory against Derry has now become imperative as the season comes to a close. The bottom team in the table will be automatically relegated with second from bottom play the First Division runners-up ? likely to be either Finn Harps or Cobh Ramblers ? in a home and away play-off. Friday night's match kicks off at 7.45pm and Galway United have appealed for supporters to come out in force and get behind the side in their second last home match of the season. Victory will lift United to fifth from bottom but defeat, or even a draw, will leave the club's future hanging in the balance. |
