The annual Derek Crowe Memorial 6-A-Side soccer league, which is held in memory of the former Mervue Utd/Galway Utd player, takes place this Saturday and Sunday at McHugh Avenue in Mervue.

This is the 12th year of this popular competition and this year the competition is again sponsored by Better Bedding, Sean Mulvoy Road.

The competition has once again attracted a huge entry of the maximum 64 teams taking part in the competition with over 120 games due to be played over the weekend on three 6-a-side pitches along McHugh Avenue in Mervue.

The first of the group matches kick-off on Saturday morning at 10.30 a.m. with 32 teams progressing to the knockout stage on Sunday after Saturday' league stages and the final is timed for 4 p.m. on Sunday evening.

The competition has firmly established itself has one of the top tournaments in Connacht over the summer months and ranks second only to the Salthill Fives.

Last year's tournament produced one of the most thrilling finishes ever to the competition as the final on the Sunday afternoon was decided by a golden goal in the fourth period of extra time after an excellent game of soccer.

Joey's Buzzers added their name as the eleventh winners of the Derek Crowe Memorial Cup after Eric Lavine scored the all important golden goal for the winners defeating a very young Finishing Touches side in the final.

Huge crowds are once again expected to descend on McHugh Avenue in Mervue over the weekend as some 130 games will be played over the two days.

The competition which is held in memory of the former Mervue Utd and Galway United player, has proved to be a great success and a fitting tribute to Derek as can be seen for this year's huge entry of 64 teams once again.

This year's competition will no doubt be as competitive as previous year's as Joey's Buzzers will be looking to retain the title they won last year.

They will face stiff opposition in defending their crown this year from teams like five times previous winners the Vibrating Chickens, 2002 winners Classic Seven and 2001 winners Six Shooters while other teams who will be looking to add their name to the winners list will include the Better Bettor Schoolbags (Mervue Utd Junior B) twice runners-up, Young Scuts (Runners-up in 2004), Useless Sparks (Winners of this years Lee Fleming Fives), Keenans Men from Athlone and the usual one or two surprise teams.

Copies of the Fixtures and Groups for Saturday's action are available from Great Outdoors, Mervue Utd Clubhouse, Fahy's Field and Fibber MaGees or by phoning Terry Flaherty at 087 - 6738573 or Peter Fealy at 087 - 6738573.
