Round one of the 2007 Connacht Mountain Bike League took place in Ross Wood in Killanin on Sunday. In stark contrast to the wet and cold end to the 2006 league, Sunday's competition was held in ideal conditions for racing.
The predominantly dry track made for some fast and exciting racing over a 3km circuit laid out by Peter Walsh, who put a lot of work into making a course that would test the ability and stamina of all the riders. The course looped in and out of technical sections in the wooded areas linked by lengths of fire-road which gave competitors opportunities to overtake.

The large senior field included the Irish Mountain Bike Marathon Champion (Sports Category) Donncha O'Brien, a recent signing for West Coast Wheelers; Mizen Head to Fair Head record holder Padraig Marrey (Western Lakes); and 2006 Connacht Mountain Bike League Champion Brian O'Donnell (West Coast Wheelers).

The pace was fast from the gun, with the field strung out after the first technical section as several tricky descents caught a number of riders out.

By the start of the third and second last lap the race was between Marrey, O'Brien and O'Donnell, but then a mechanical problem caused O'Donnell to lose time on the two others, which left him chasing them to the line.

First home was Padraig Marrey, followed closely by Donncha O'Brien, with O'Donnell third.

Jay Ryan (WCW) took the novice race, and Sadhbh Baxter rounded off a good day for WCW with a strong ride to win the Ladies' class.

The next round of the league will take place in Kilcornan Woods in Clarenbridge next Sunday, with sign-on at 11am and racing starting at 12 noon.

All classes including underage, beginners welcome, special skills course for novices, helmets compulsory. Further information on cycling in Galway, including leisure, road and mountain-biking, is available on www.westcoastwheelers.com.
