Galway's hopes of winning the All-Ireland hurling title for the first time in 20 years have been dealt a major blow with confirmation that captain David Collins is out for the season. The former Young Hurler of the Year had been hopeful of making a comeback during the championship from a horror ankle injury but has been told he is out for the year. The stylish defender suffered an ankle dislocation playing for Connacht in the inter-pro final at Croke Park in October and has struggled to recover since then. His worst fears were realised when medical experts told him that he had no chance of making it back before the end of the championship. "It is heart-breaking to get the final word on it, to know for sure that I am out. It is a tough one to take but I was kind of edging towards it all the time when I wasn't getting back fully. "The bruising wasn't going down and it wasn't feeling good. But things happen for a reason so I will just have to deal with it," said the Liam Mellows clubman. The 24-year old missed all of Galway's league campaign and now leaves Ger Loughnane without his captain and a key defender for the championship. Galway will open their campaign away to Antrim on June 28. |
