GMIT made light of the long trip to Leitrim and escaped with a share of the spoils in Sunday's opening FBD League clash in Cloone. However, the Dublin Road students had Jonathan Ryan to thank as his late equaliser ensured that GMIT got a deserved point from the clash. Leitrim took an early lead and were fortunate in the 16th minute when Philip McGuinness' effort breached goalkeeper Donal Dowd's defences.

Nonetheless, the students battled back and trailed by only two points at the break on a 1-8 to 0-9 score line, thanks to Ryan and Stephen Griffin.

Leitrim carried their lead into the closing minutes when consecutive scores from Ryan and Griffin clinched a point for Martin Collins' men, with the sides finishing at 1-11 to 0-14.

Elsewhere, six points from Sean Armstrong was not enough for NUI Galway to leave Garrymore with reward as Mayo's Mark Ronaldson kicked seven to hand John O’Mahony's 14-men the two points.

The Green and Red held a 0-6 to 0-5 lead at the break with four of the six scores coming from the boot of Ronaldson as Armstrong kept the college in contact with a brace of his own.

The Salthill/Knocknacarra club man notched up two late scores to put the final result in doubt, but a free from the sideline late on from Jimmy Killeen sealed the 0-11 to 0-9 win for Mayo who had Keith Higggins sent off late on.
