INTERNATIONAL CALL-UP . . . Galway United skipper Wesley Charles who has been drafted into the St. Vincent & the Grenadines squad as they begin preparations for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. Galway United captain Wesley Charles will next week begin training with St. Vincent & the Grenadines in preparation for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers which start this summer. Charles, who has 86 caps for his country, will take part in three international friendlies over the coming month, two against Guyana along with a fixture against neighbours Barbados. The World Cup draw, which took place in Durban, South Africa in November saw St. Vincent paired with Canada; a two match series which will take place in June 2008. Both Cananda & St. Vincent & the Grenadines are seeded teams in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). The winner of the Canada-St Vincent tie will advance to the Stage Three of the qualifiers scheduled for August to November 2008. Three of the 35 CONCACAF countries will automatically qualify for the finals, while the fourth place finisher will enter a playoff with the fifth-place country in the South American section. Charles will be hoping to emulate St. Vincent's last outing in the competition, when they beat Nicaragua and St. Kitts and Nevis on the road to Germany 2006, before losing to Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago at the semi-final group phase. |
