Galway United community programme in its inaugural year was a huge success flying the banner of "Show Racism the Red Card". Over 30 schools signed up to become a friend of Galway United and in doing so received visits from players, management and officials throughout the year. The SRTRC campaign is an educational campaign aimed at tackling racism in school, football and society and already there have been positive results in changes dispelling myths and changing mindsets. Football, as they head of the local community, is acting as a role model in tackling these social stigmas. In the month of December alone Galway United players and staff visited 15 schools across the region delivering anti racism workshops, aided by Jason Craughwell, Coordinator of the Galway Sports Partnership and Ernest Bishop, Galway City Partnership. The Galway United Club Promotions Officer, Daniel Walsh, said that they planned to carry out several more campaigns. "This year we will be visiting every town centre in Co. Galway in a campaign to Give Drugs the Boot in conjunction with the Western Region Drugs Task Force. "This will take the form of a penalty competition where we will be asking people or all ages across the county to step up and give drugs the boot," said Walsh.
