Galway United Football Club was the overall winner of the Proactive Marketing Institute West Region Marketing Awards 2007.

The club beat off stiff competition from all industries to win the €32,000 advertising, consultancy and print top prize from sponsors The Connacht Tribune, Galway Bay FM, The Mayo News, Snap and Proactive.

Now in its seventh year, the Proactive Marketing Institute West Region Marketing Awards recognises innovation and excellence in marketing by companies and individuals from Counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Patrick Brennan, Chairperson of the West Region of the Marketing Institute said the awards acknowledged companies which had managed to develop their business through good marketing campaigns.

"These awards recognise outstanding achievements in marketing in Irish business by both individuals and companies in the West. Galway United is an outstanding player in its field and its success story is a great role model for business and marketing professionals throughout the country."

Galway United Chief Executive Officer Nick Leeson said that the cliub had benefited from a strong marketing campaign.

"Marketing is a key element of our overall business strategy which has brought Premier League football back to Galway and delivered a 300% increase in attendances in two years. It is a great honour on behalf of the club and all our supporters to accept this prestigious award."

Neil Johnson from Croi was awarded the Proactive West Region Marketing Person of the Year Award for his pioneering role in attracting voluntary effort, fundraising and delivering practical action in the fight against heart disease in the west of Ireland over a 14 year period.

Other awards winners included COPE (Marketing Award for Charities and Non-Profit Organisations); Dine to Meet (Young Business Marketing Award); Galway Arts Festival (Marketing in the Arts Award) and Delphi Adventure Company (Tourism Marketing Award).
