Galway's athletic clubs enjoyed more success on the second weekend of the recent Athletics Ireland National Indoor Championships in Nenagh, adding ten further All-Ireland medals to the fourteen secured on the previous weekend. ![]() Star of the show was Craughwell AC's Cathriona Farrell, who took gold in the U17 girls high jump with an outstanding clearance of 1.75m, registering a new national record in this age group. The performance also ensures Cathriona qualification for the European Youth Olympics and the World Youth Championships to be held next year as well as gaining admission onto the Athletics Ireland carding scheme for elite athletes. In a strong Craughwell showing, Linda Porter clamed silver in the U15 girls 800m with another personal best, while Maeve Curley also took second in the U17 girls 1500m. Galway City Harriers' Aedin Esslemont took bronze in the U18 girls. Galway clubs really excelled in the relay events with GCH claiming three team golds. Oisin Cunningham, Tomas Donovan, Colm Hughes, Keegan Kelly and Simon O'Shaughnessy ran a superb race in the U13 boys 4x100m. Rachel Allen, Leona McGuire, Amy Rohan and Rachel Shaw combined to great effect to take the U17 girls 4x200m, while Aedin Hanahoe and Rebecca Nolan joined the winning U18 girls 4x200m team. Craughwell also performed well in the relays. The U13 girls team of Ellen Bryan, Niamh Hannify, Kelly Harte and Elaine Ryder landed gold in the 4x100m, while Brendan Gallagher, PJ Kelly, Jack Raftery, Finn Stoneman and Peter Treacy combined for 3rd in the u14 boys 4x200m in 1:56.36. Athenry AC added to the Galway success with bronze medals in the U14 girls 4x200m where Marie Cooney, Dearbhla Fox, Orlaith McGrath, Hayleigh Somers and Marie Touhy ran a great race. |
