Galway made a winning start to their FBD Connacht League campaign when they scored a 0-13 to 0-10 win over Sligo in difficult conditions at Tubbercurry on Sunday. Joe Bergin, operating at wing-forward, was outstanding for Peter Ford's men, while Cormac Bane and Sean Armstrong were also to the fore. Ja Fallon, who stepped down as a selector last year to resume his playing career, came on as a substitute while Nicky Joyce also returned to the Galway team after a year in exile. Galway led by 0-8 to 0-4 at half-time and victory was assured with good efforts from Bane and Armstrong in the closing stages. Meanwhile, the GMIT game against Leitrim will be refixed for later in the month. The match was originally fixed for Pearse Stadium, then switched to Castlegar but was again changed on Sunday morning to Mervue when it was then called off. Sligo IT caused a surprise when they defeated Roscommon by 1-7 to 0-8 at Elphin, with substitute Michael Doherty getting the game's only goal. The second round of the competition takes place this weekend with Galway playing Leitrim in Tuam Stadium, GMIT take on Sligo in Dunmore and NUIG meet Roscommon at Woodmount. |
